Benchmark your Google Business Profile against the top competitors in the Local 3-Pack. Identify gaps and opportunities to outperform them on every signal that matters.

Key Checklist:

  • Search your primary keyword and screenshot the current Local 3-Pack
  • Audit each competitor's GMB profile (categories, reviews, photos, posts)
  • Compare your listing completeness against the top 3 competitors
  • Identify categories your competitors use that you may be missing
  • Note their review count, rating, and response strategy
  • Document all gaps and prioritize optimizations by impact

Local Justifications

Google displays justification snippets below your listing in search results. These come from website content, reviews, posts, products, and inventory. Optimizing for justifications increases your click-through rate.

Key Checklist:

  • Understand the types: website mentions, review snippets, posts, sold here, in-stock
  • Add target keywords naturally in your website content for website mention justifications
  • Encourage reviewers to mention specific services or products
  • Create Google Posts containing your target keywords
  • Add products with keyword-rich descriptions to trigger sold here justifications
  • Monitor which justifications appear for your listing over time

Profile Title & Categories

Your business name and category selections are among the strongest ranking signals in local search. Optimize them carefully within Google's guidelines.

Key Checklist:

  • Ensure your business name matches your real-world signage and branding
  • Select the most specific primary category that matches your core service
  • Add all relevant additional categories (up to 9 additional)
  • Research competitor categories using GMB tools or browser extensions
  • Avoid keyword stuffing in your business name (violates guidelines)
  • Review category options periodically as Google adds new ones

Products & Services

Adding products and services to your GMB listing increases relevance signals and gives potential customers more information. This applies to all businesses, not just retail.

Key Checklist:

  • Add all your services with detailed keyword-rich descriptions
  • Include pricing information where possible to build trust
  • Add products even if you are a service-based business
  • Upload a photo for each product or service listing
  • Organize products and services into logical categories
  • Update offerings seasonally or when your menu changes

Google rewards profiles that are completely filled out. Every empty field is a missed opportunity to send relevance signals and attract customers.

Key Checklist:

  • Set accurate regular and special business hours
  • Write a compelling 750-character business description with keywords
  • Define your service areas if you serve customers at their location
  • Add your local phone number and website URL
  • Add an appointment or booking link if applicable
  • Set business attributes (e.g., wheelchair accessible, Wi-Fi, outdoor seating)
  • Add your opening date to build trust with customers
  • Verify all contact information is consistent with your website and citations
